Chinese Researcher Wins the 2025 Jack Dongarra Early Career Award

HAMBURG, Germany, May 5, 2025 – We are pleased to announce that one of the world’s most talented early-career researchers in high performance computing (HPC), Dr. Lin Gan of Tsinghua University, has been selected as the recipient of the ISC 2025 Jack Dongarra Early Career Award. The award committee recognized his exceptional contributions to developing scalable algorithms, optimizing performance, and pioneering FPGA-based frameworks for acceleration.

We are equally pleased that this prestigious accolade, now in its third year, has expanded its reach to include a Chinese HPC researcher. Highly respected academics and researchers in the field, from China, Japan, Germany, and the United States, endorsed Dr. Lin Gan’s nomination for the award.

Gan is an associate professor at the Yau Mathematical Sciences Center at Tsinghua University in China, where he earned his PhD in computer science in 2016. His research focuses on designing and developing scalable algorithms, automated tuning, next-generation HPC architectures, and optimization tools for efficient numerical simulations. He has established a set of innovative HPC solutions that enable rapid application deployment and effective performance optimization for a variety of numerical applications. These techniques have been implemented on several supercomputers, such as the Sunway and Tianhe machines, leading to significant improvements in the performance and resolution of numerical applications across a number of domains, such as earthquake simulation, climate modeling, molecular dynamics, and quantum computing.

Recognized for his contributions, Gan received the prestigious ACM Gordon Bell Prize in 2016 and was a finalist for the award again the following year. He also earned the IEEE TCHPC Award for Early Career Researchers in 2018 and the IEEE FPL Most Significant Paper Award in 25 Years. With over 90 publications and nearly 5,000 citations in top-tier journals and conferences like Science, Nature Methods, and SC, his work underscores the importance of HPC in real-world applications and aims to have a lasting impact on the future of supercomputing both in China and globally.

The award ceremony will take place on Tuesday, June 10, followed by Dr. Gan’s lecture on a topic of his choice. The award entails a cash prize of 5,000 euros.

Other ISC Awards

The Hans Meuer Award will also be presented this year at the same award ceremony as the Jack Dongarra Early Career Award. The award-winning team consists of contributors from the Technical University of Munich and Leibniz Supercomputing Center: Durganshu Mishra, Stephan Vanecek, Jorge Echavarria, Xiaolong Deng, Burak Mete, Laura Schulz, and Martin Schulz for their paper on “Towards a Unified Architectural Representation in HPCQC: Extending sys-sage for Quantum Technologies.

We are also pleased to announce that three poster finalists have been shortlisted for the ISC Poster Award for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places. They are:

DisCostiC: Digital Twin Performance Simulations Unlocking Hardware-Software Interplay, authored by Ayesha Afzal, Georg Hager, and Gerhard Wellein of Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nuremberg.

The Art of Process Pinning: Turning Chaos into Core Harmony, by Thomas Breuer, Filipe Guimarães, Wolfgang Frings, Jens Henrick Göbbert, Carina Himmels, and Chrysovalantis Paschoulas from the Forschungszentrum Jülich.

ZeroSum: User Space Utility for Monitoring Hardware and Software Resources for HPC by Kevin Huck and Allen Malony of the University of Oregon.

Everyone holding a conference and exhibition pass is invited to join the Poster Pitching and Awarding ceremony on Wednesday, June 11.

About ISC 2025

ISC 2025 returns to the Congress Center Hamburg from June 10 – 13 this year for its 40th edition. Since its inception in 1986, it has been recognized as the world’s oldest and Europe’s must-attend event for HPC, high-performance data analytics, AI, and Quantum Computing professionals. The exhibition will showcase the latest developments in HPC, covering all significant advancements in system design, programming models, applications, artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and emerging technologies.
