ISC 2025 Closing Keynote on Meeting the Challenges of the Post-Exascale Era

HAMBURG, Germany, 10.02.2025 – We are excited to announce that Prof. Dr. Yutong Lu, the Director of the National Supercomputing Center in Guangzhou, China, will deliver the ISC 2025 Closing Keynote. She is recognized as a leading authority in next-generation architectures and the convergence of advanced artificial intelligence (AI) and high performance computing (HPC) systems and applications.

Prof. Lu’s extensive research and development career in HPC has spanned several generations of domestic supercomputers in China, which includes her work as the deputy chief designer for the Tianhe-2 system. This system held the rank of the world’s number one system on the TOP500 list from June 2013 until November 2015.

Her work has facilitated significant advancements in climate modeling, bioinformatics, and materials science, among other fields. Her efforts have not only enhanced the performance and efficiency of supercomputers but have also made these powerful tools more accessible to a broader range of researchers and industry users. In her keynote titled “Tackling Fragmentation in Exascale Supercomputing and Beyond,” scheduled for Thursday, June 12, Prof. Lu will focus on issues like hardware heterogeneity, the broadening of the application space, and the convergence of traditional HPC with AI. Together, they are dramatically expanding the scope of HPC.

This expansion has led to a significant fragmentation, both in terms of system architecture and application requirements, necessitating a wide array of computing resources and environments. To navigate this fragmentation, Prof. Lu will argue that a collaborative co-design approach involving hardware, software, and application stakeholders will be imperative to bridge the divides. These changes include new unified, portable programming models and common frameworks that can encapsulate the diversity of hardware and system design. Prof. Lu believes by comprehensively addressing these challenges, the full potential of the post-exascale era can be met, paving the way for a new path in supercomputing.

About Prof. Dr. Yutong Lu

Prof. Lu is a professor in the School of Computer Science at Sun Yat-sen University. She also serves as the Director of the National Supercomputing Center in both Guangzhou and Shenzhen. While also leading a number of high performance computing and big data projects under the support of the National Natural Science Foundation of China.

In addition, Prof. Lu has been recognized as an ISC Fellow and CCF Fellow. She is a member of the Expert Committee of China’s National Key R&D Program and has won several national awards for science and technology advancement. Prof. Lu’s ongoing research interests are focused on the cutting-edge next-generation architectures, as well as the convergence of advanced AI and HPC systems and applications.

Registration for ISC 2025 will open in the middle of March. It is expected to attract over 3,500 attendees, including users, technology developers, and providers in the fields of HPC, AI, and quantum computing.
