Optimization challenges are omnipresent in scientific research and industrial applications. They emerge in planning of production processes, drug-target interaction prediction, cancer radiation treatment scheduling, flight and train scheduling, vehicle routing, and trading. Optimization also plays an increasingly important role in computer vision, image processing, data mining and machine learning. The task in many of these optimization challenges is to find the best solution among a finite set of feasible solutions. Such problems are formulated as discrete optimization problems. Quantum annealing is a new technique that exploits quantum fluctuations to solve optimization problems. Its main potential use is in solving combinatorial optimization problems featuring a discrete search space with many local minima. D-Wave Systems is the first company that commercializes quantum annealers. Their quantum annealers are programmable integrated circuits of superconducting qubits, the quantum equivalents of bits in a digital computer, that perform quantum annealing. The latest D-Wave system, D-Wave 2000Q™, comprises more than 2000 qubits. The availability of operational hardware of this size allows for the exploration of quantum annealing for a range of real-world applications. In this session, apart from an introduction to general principles of quantum annealing and quantum annealer hardware, results of such endeavours in science and industry will be discussed. |
