“Burst Buffers” is the buzzword of the day and while a few specific use cases do benefit from such technologies, the question should be asked: Is adding a separate expensive tier incurring additional network complexity, long term support issues and expensive data movement the right way?? Seagate does not believe so and argue for a more transparent solution. By adding enhanced flash SSDs to each storage server, modifying the Linux I/O stack with additional intelligence and deliver I/O acceleration within the parallel filesystem (Lustre or IBM Spectrum Scale), a fully transparent and more versatile solution can be built. The ClusterStor L/G300N platform is enhanced with this type of functionality which will significantly enhance small block I/Os and random file system access. |
