It has been successfully demonstrated that, amongst others, not only abstract but also real-world optimization problems can be represented and solved on the D-Wave quantum annealer. We aimed for solving a problem most of us suffer from every day: stop-and-go traffic. Maximizing traffic flow (flux) is a problem that cannot be optimally solved in finite time, which is due to combinatorial explosion. By comparing suitable classical solutions to the problem, such as evolutionary search and complex filtering, with results acquired by quantum annealing, we gained deep insights about practical application scenarios of the machine. In our presentation, we will talk in detail about our experiences and the project outcome. |
